Material Requirements Planning answers one question: what should we build, and do we have the parts? First, the master data everything hangs off
Before a single unit is planned, three master records define the product. In the game you build them in order:
- Material Master created
MM01— FG-9001 Gear Assembly now exists: a FERT (finished product) in pieces, for plant 1000. Every other record and document hangs off this material. - Bill of Materials saved
CS01— the recipe for one Gear Assembly: Steel Coil ×2 and Bearing Kit ×1. MRP explodes it into component requirements and the order consumes exactly these quantities. - Routing saved
CA01— the steps: Op 0010 Cutting → 0020 Assembly → 0030 Testing, each at its work centre. The routing tells the production order which machines do the work and how long it takes.
Then, the MRP run — the planning phase
Master data is built once; the factory runs on it continuously. Here's the planning loop:
- Demand received
MD61— a planned independent requirement arrives on the Order Board from sales & forecasting and waits in the queue. This is what MRP will plan. - MRP run
MD02— nets demand against stock and explodes the BOM into dependent requirements, flagging any shortage. MRP is the planning phase — nothing is produced yet. - Planned Order created
MD02— MRP turns covered demand into a planned order: a proposal, not yet firm. Take it to Production Control to convert & release.
Finally, execution on the shop floor
- Production Order converted & released
CO40 · REL— the plan is made firm; the order carries the BOM and routing, and release lets the line start. - Goods Issue posted
MIGO · movement 261— BOM components are issued from Production Supply to the order, and machine & labour cost is charged as production starts. - Operation confirmed
CO11N— each routing operation is confirmed as its work centre finishes, booking machine and labour time. - Goods Receipt posted
MIGO · movement 101— the finished Gear Assemblies are received into the output location. Components in, product out — the order is complete.
When MRP finds a shortage
MRP doesn't just plan — it exposes gaps. The game makes you close them:
- Material shortage — a BOM component is missing from Production Supply, so planning stalls until it's covered.
- Purchase Order raised
